Is the American political system broken?

Written by admin on March 3, 2010 – 2:12 pm -

In both parties, politics have become all or nothing. The extremists are running things, and they’re out to punish anyone in the middle of the road or less than 100 percent committed to the cause — whatever it is.
It’s not just moderates and centrists who are on the chopping block. It’s anyone whose politics are too nuanced or complicated to fit in a 30-second television ad. It’s anyone who is going against the grain with unpopular views, or telling the faithful what they need to hear as opposed to what they want to hear. And it’s anyone who appears, on any issue, to have crossed the playground to consort with the enemy.

What say you?

    It’s been broke,

It’s actually not as broke as it is fully corrupted by the two party dictatorship.

Yes, the parties are getting more polarized, as evidenced that there are fewer and fewer moderates in both parties. But I’m not sure why this would mean that the “system” is “broken.” The voters are still getting what they want.; or at least they are being given the option of choosing what they want.

I do believe that our political system is broken, but my concern is with how the Supreme Court is behaving (hijacking a Presidential election; usurping the legislature’s role in making laws, etc.).

And the radicals in the general public are supporting it. When you vote for Dems or Reps, you are endorsing their current platform. Those who vote Dem or Rep are just as responsible as the politicos. Vote Green!

The general public needs to take a more active role in both local, state , and national politics to assure the vitality of our democracy.

The important thing is participation rather than political affiliation (or non-affiliation) with any political party!!

    not completely broke

it probably needs some updates though

our candidates for important offices are being chosen for us by money, this is a bad sign

there is not much difference between the parties, and the differences are mostly trivial and overblown

we’ve let the corporations take over, the corporations have no moral obligation other than profit, the political leaders do their bidding because they are the ones who choose the leaders

corporations are a shield for the greedy

that is why it WORKS! being broken and fixed, divided and united, protest a war and wage it at the same time. our system is more like fifty countries working together under one flag.

Absolutely it’s broken. Congress has become useless.
Term limits need to be set. I would like to see single term limits. The moment they arrive in DC, they start competing for dollars for their reelection. One term limit – no more influence peddling. No more out of touch 80 something old farts deciding our fate. No more state sponsored pork in their bills – Congress needs to be National interest, not State. No more “came to do good, stayed to do well.”

Broken ? Definitely! And the blame can be placed squarely on the shoulders of…..Us!.Yes,we the people have allowed our country to slip ever closer to those novel regimes of bygone days. We spend more time worrying about who is going to win American idol than we do about what laws are being passed by our own government. And as long as we continue to disengage from the process, voting for the lesser of two evils, and letting them continue their Business as usual then nothing will change
